In 2021, Ample introduced its first-generation battery swap station after seven years of stealthy development. Equipped with modular battery packs resembling Lego bricks, electric vehicles effortlessly enter the platform and witness the automated removal of depleted modules, instantly replaced with fully charged ones within a remarkable time frame of under 10 minutes. The discharged batteries are then recharged, ensuring their availability for the next customer.
Since the launch, Ample has deployed these stations across the San Francisco Bay Area to support renowned fleet partners like Uber and Sally in conducting tests on this rapid swap solution. Furthermore, the company has collaborated closely with last-mile delivery services, seeking valuable insights into their specific requirements.
Ample addressed the challenges faced by fleets, stating, “Despite well-intentioned efforts to electrify fleets, drivers could spend upwards of 10-12 hours, or 25% of a work week, at a charging station.” Recognizing the need for reliable EV charging options for city dwellers lacking access to overnight charging facilities, Ample developed a solution to address this issue.
The latest battery swap station accommodates electric vehicles of all sizes, ranging from compact passenger cars to larger Sprinter-sized delivery vans. As vehicles approach the platform, it elevates for the battery swap process to commence. Drivers and passengers now have the choice to remain inside the vehicle during the procedure or step out and stretch their legs. Within a mere five minutes, the low-charge battery modules are replaced with fully charged ones, allowing the vehicle to exit the station and continue its journey.
Ample recently shared the experience of a San Francisco-based Uber driver who covered 120 miles, transporting passengers around the Bay Area before needing battery attention. Approaching the Ample station, the driver’s authorized vehicle was automatically identified, and after parking, the quick-swap process was initiated through a smartphone app.
The domestically produced compact battery modules have undergone extensive safety enhancements, making them compatible with integration into any modern electric vehicle. The new stations are now redesigned for rapid deployment to a site in just three days and boast increased durability to withstand diverse local conditions, reflecting the company’s expansion plans. Additionally, the stations are remotely monitored around the clock, ensuring enhanced safety and customer support.
