The BMW luxury car brand is preparing to introduce its first fully electric car, the i5, which has been in testing for some time. The next-generation 5 series-based electric vehicle (EV) is set to make its global debut on May 24, and BMW has released a teaser video on its official Instagram account, providing a glimpse of the car from both the outside and inside.
The video reveals the i5’s kidney-type grilles with illuminated LED lights, slim LED headlights, and two vertical LED daytime running lights inside them. The i5 will also feature a dashboard identical to the 7 Series.
The teaser does not disclose many details about the car, but it suggests that the i5 will have advanced yet futuristic features that will make it stand out in the market. The i5 will be offered in both single-motor and dual-motor models on a global scale, although BMW has not yet released any official information about the powertrains.
The base model is expected to have an electric motor on the rear axle, generating roughly 330 bhp, while the top-of-the-line xDrive model is likely to produce a maximum power of 581 bhp.
The i5 will also use BMW’s latest fifth-generation eDrive technology, as well as a special torque control system that enhances dynamics, traction, and driving stability. Once it is launched, the i5 sedan will compete globally against rivals such as the Tesla Model S and the Mercedes-Benz EQE.
