One of the hottest new EV topics is to demonstrate leadership in wireless charging. Does this indicate that wireless EV charging is finally here? Or does this simply mean that EV wireless charging is on the rise in the current hype cycle?
It’s difficult to say. Anyone can make their own guess based on technological considerations, efficiency considerations, practicality considerations, human nature considerations — or something else. Personally, if the cost can be brought down sufficiently, my perspective as an educated sociologist and person who pays attention is that convenience will triumph. Humans are willing to pay a high price and, ironically, go to great lengths for a little extra convenience. In a nutshell, we’re slackers.
Stellantis is one of the world’s largest automakers (if you add all of its brands together). Like other large automakers, when it enters new area, it appears to be notably remarkable and potentially significant to the sector as a whole. If Stellantis provides wireless EV charging with its EVs, doesn’t Volkswagen Group have to do the same? The Alliance Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi?
In any event, the collaboration between HEVO, a wireless EV charging startup, and Stellantis is the big news today. In Auburn Hills, Michigan, the firms will begin by installing Level 2 wireless charging on a Chrysler Pacifica PHEV.
If the demonstration project goes successfully in 2023, they will go on to 50 kW wireless EV charging, and eventually to Stellantis EV customers. For the time being, it’s a collaboration to keep an eye on. I believe we will receive an update in 6 months to a year.
