Anthony Portantino, a California State Senator, has sponsored legislation that would provide up to $2,000 in incentives to vehicle owners who convert their ICE-powered vehicles to EVs.
According to Portantino, Senate Bill 301, which was just introduced, “would give a financial refund for consumers in California who want to convert their gas-powered cars to electric vehicles but can’t afford to do so.” He also stated that the incentives are part of a new strategy to promote EVs while meeting stringent climate goals.
According to sources, a new EV costs on average $66,000; however, converting from ICE to electric power can be done for as little as $14,000.
Companies such as Ford and General Motors are developing electric crate motors, which will undoubtedly assist to generate interest in electromodding a car. However, the majority of the electromods on the market today are based on iconic historic automobiles and come at a high price.
Aside from the incentives, the Senator believes the bill will help create jobs in the EV conversion business.
