Sony, in conjunction with Honda, unveiled something significant at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. On Thursday, the business unveiled the Afeela, a new electric vehicle prototype, and claimed that it will begin selling the vehicle in 2026.
Qualcomm technology will be used in the Afeela, a Sony Mobility subsidiary created in partnership with Honda. According to Sony, preorders for the automobile will be available in the first half of 2025, with deliveries beginning in North America in early 2026. When seen during the event, the automobile had sporty edges and a black top. During a keynote address at CES, Yasuhide Mizuno, CEO of Sony Honda Mobility, stated, “Afeela represents our concept of an interactive relationship where people feel the sensation of interactive mobility and where mobility can detect and understand people and society by utilising sensing and AI technologies.”
Sony’s eagerly anticipated entry into the electric vehicle market, announced in March in collaboration with Honda, demonstrates how automakers are emphasising the cockpit experience in cars, which offers the potential to sell content via subscription services cars, particularly as autonomous driving capabilities advance.
It’s worth noting that the announcement came just after Qualcomm revealed the Snapdragon Ride Flex SoC, a new CPU built to handle assisted driving and cockpit functions like as entertainment. Various chips have been utilised in the past. As a result, producers will be able to reduce expenses, according to a firm official quoted by Reuters.
The vehicle will be zero-emission, but Sony and Honda have suggested that it would be capable of more than simply movement. The car will provide passengers unrivalled entertainment options, and it will have 45 sensors and cameras throughout.
