In the next months, Ford will show its first EV based on Volkswagen’s MEB chassis. This new EV will be constructed in Cologne, Germany, to replace the Ford Fiesta hatchback in Europe. When it is announced, the EV is likely to be similarly configured to the Volkswagen ID 4, with which it will share the majority of its components.
Both automakers acknowledged co-development of an all-new EV crossover for 2021, although details were kept under wraps. A couple of high-ranking Ford executives have already leaked the first details about its design on social media, implying that a reveal is only a few weeks away.
On Twitter, Martin Sander, head of Ford’s Model E electrification division, revealed a portion of the Skoda Enyaq rival’s front end, adding, “Can’t wait for 2023, when we will tear off the cover of our first electric passenger car arriving from Cologne.”
While just a tiny portion of the vehicle is visible, it is evident that this new EV will represent a significant shift in the appearance of Ford’s European-market vehicles. According to our sister newspaper Autocar UK, Ford’s most successful US-market vehicles – most notably the Bronco and F-150 – will influence the design of its worldwide goods in the future.
Everything is still under wraps, except for the aero-optimized wheel designs, contrasting lower bumper, and hefty headlamps, but in size and shape, it is clear that Ford’s upcoming EV will be aimed directly against vehicles like the Toyota bZ4X, Nissan Ariya, and Volvo XC40 Recharge.
Ford’s European marketing head Peter Zillig shared a darkened preview photograph of the vehicle on LinkedIn, showcasing a captivating LED front light signature that might become a distinctive characteristic of Ford’s new-era vehicles.
