General Motors Opens Canada’s First Large-Scale EV Factory

Ottawa- General Motors, the world's largest automaker, inaugurated Canada's first full-scale electric vehicle plant on Monday, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in attendance.

The plant will build BrightDrop Zevo 600 electric delivery vans. GM aims to have as many as 50,000 of them rolling off its assembly line per year by 2025. Ottawa- General Motors, the world’s largest automaker, inaugurated Canada’s first full-scale electric car production on Monday, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in attendance. The assembly facility in Ingersoll, Ontario, had been retooled with funds from the federal and provincial governments totaling more than $500 million (US$382 million).

It is part of a bigger Canadian EV plan that includes mining essential minerals like lithium as well as manufacturing EV batteries for the North American car industry.

“Today, we’re launching Canada’s first full-scale commercial electric car facility,” Trudeau said at a news conference with GM officials. Marissa West, president of GM Canada, dubbed it a “significant Canadian milestone,” noting that a retooling of the facility that had produced gas-powered SUVs began in May and was finished in just seven months. “Canada’s EV future is no longer in sight.
